FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH INCIDENCE OF DENTAL CARIES IN CHILDREN AGED 10-12 YEARS OLD IN 33 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PALEMBANG

Abstract


Background : Dental caries is a chronic disease of hard tissue dental enamel demineralization caused by bacteria that exist on the plaque, at the final stage of this caries cause tooth decay and cavities. Dental caries in children is influenced by many factors, one of which is outside factors (tooth brushing habits, knowledge, education, occupation and income). Therefore it needs to do research on the factors associated with the occurrence of dental caries in children.

Method: This research is an analitic reseach with cross sectional design. The research samples are students of in 33 elementary school in Palembang 2010 total 62 people. Technic sampling using proportional random sampling. Statistics test using chi-square with confidence level 95% and significant level 5%.

Result: The results showed that there is a relationship between tooth brushing habits of the respondence (ρ- value = 0.004), knowledge of the respondence (ρ-value = 0.002), maternal education (ρ-value = 0.042), maternal knowledge (ρ-value = 0.009) with incidence dental caries in 33 elementary school in Palembang. Conclusion: Suggestions of this study should health workers oral health services periodically through calculus program.
