DETERMINANT ANALYSIS OF SUBJECTIVE HEARING SYMPTOMS OF LOCOMOTIVE TRAINMEN IN RAILWAY COMPANY, III.1 SUBDIVISION REGION KERTAPATI PALEMBANG
Abstract
Background : Subjective hearing symptoms experienced by the locomotive trainmen is one indication of their health problems, particularly related to the hearing that occurs due to noise. The high intensity and long-term exposure noise experienced by them and the unavailability of ear plug for them may cause their subjective hearing symptoms.
Method : A survey research using cross-sectional design was implemented in this study. One hundred and six locomotive trainmen were selected using simple random sampling technique. The data were analyzed by mean of univariate and bivariate statistics such as chi-square statistic.
Results : The results showed that two of four independent variables were significantly associated with subjective hearing symptoms. These were the length of exposure (p-value: 0.018) and intensity noise (p-value: 0.018).
Conclusion : The locomotive trainmen suffered from subjective hearing symptoms. It is recommended that the railway company provides noise dampening equipment, maintains locomotives, performs a hearing conservation program as well as intensive monitoring and evaluation
