IMPLEMENTATION OF OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH AT LABORATORY CHEMISTRY OF MATEMATHICS AND NATURAL SCIENCES FACULTY OF SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY 2009

Abstract

Background : The laboratory of chemistry is a facility for education, research, service and quality test. There is risky and dangerous chemical which brings the effect for the heath of humankinds and environment. The objective of this research is to evaluate the implementation of safety and health in the laboratory of chemistry.

Method : This is a descriptive qualitative research. The technique of instruments used is questioner and observation. This research is obtained by interviewing, FGD and studying the document and the result of observation.

Result : The equipment and chemical in the laboratory of chemistry have been applied the labeling for each chemical. The laboratory of chemistry has not been completed by safety tools, such as alarm, fire escape and fire extinguisher.

Conclusion : The equipment for practicum is in safe condition, there is storage of equipment and chemical, and the use of safety tools has been the necessity for using this laboratory. The laboratory should be completed by fire siren and fire extinguisher. It is going to be better, if the laboratory is completed by particular ventilation as well. The use of safety tools needs to be emphasized and become the duty of the users by pasting on the poster about the importance of using the fire extinguisher, dangerous condition, the instruction of work and basic rules for the safety work. Moreover, there should be hard punishment for one who does not pay attention about the rule.
