FACTORS AFFECTING RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS OCCURENCE IN JATI BERKAH FURNITURE WORKERS IN JAMBI CITY
Abstract
Background: Wood processing Industry is a fast growing industry and takes many human resources. This type of industry has a disadvantage that it can produce pollution formed as wood dust. Wood dust is a particulate coumpound which could cause respiratory problem to workers if it enters the respiratory tracts. Beside the wood dust, there are some other factors from occupational to personal aspects of workers which could cause respiratory symptoms. The aim study is analyze factors affecting respiratory symptoms in Jati Berkah furniture workers.
Method: This research used analytical method with cross sectional design approach which was conducted to 33 workers of Jati Berkah Furniture as samples. The sampling technique used was total sampling compliance with the provisions of inclusion and exclusion terms. Obtained research data was processed by using SPSS program, univariate and bivariate analysis was done by using Chi-Square and Fisher’s Exact tests.
Result: Bivariate analysis result explains that: there are relation between dust concentration (p=0,016, OR=14,29) age (p=0,016, OR= 8,4), working years (p=0,003, OR=17,875), exposure duration (p=0,009, OR=14,667) and personal protective equipment (PPE) use (p=0,027, OR=6,4) and the occurence of respiratory symptoms. There is no relation between nutrition status (p=1,000, OR=1,818) and smoking status (p=0,630, OR=2,588) with the occurence of respiratory symptoms.
Conclusion: The occurence of respiratory symptoms in workers of Jati Berkah Furniture is affected by wood dust concentration, age, working years, exposure duration, and PPE use factors. This research suggests for the business owner to fix the working area width and layout, putting local exhaust in high dust concentration area and to distribute the PPE to workers evenly and regularly.
